A lovely couple of days in this atmospheric location. The grounds are beautiful and tranquil. Anyone with an interest in 20th century history will be intrigued by the memorabilia relating to the Dambusters 617 Squadron that used the premises as its officers mess.

First and foremost, the grounds and house are absolutely beautiful and so rich with history. We really enjoyed looking around and taking in the sights and the masses of information. We opted to upgrade our room and were moved to a four poster room - it was huge, with lovely views of the garden and was well equipped with a comfortable bed, a sofa, a table and chairs and a dressing table. There were robes, slippers, White Company toiletries and both hot and cold drinks left for us which were lovely touches and were very appreciated. We did notice that the room was in need of a bit of TLC, particularly the peeling wallpaper and the very dirty windows. The bath had body hair and dirt in it, which we didn't mention as we only intended to use the shower anyway - the water pressure was poor. We booked dinner on the £40pp offer and have mixed feelings. The restaurant is beautiful, but there wasn't much atmosphere. The menu was varied with a range of options and catered for a variety of dietary requirements. The lamb was delicious, cooked to perfection and very rich. But the rest of the food fell flat. The seafood wasn't pleasant, we were surprised this was noted as a chef special and the chocolate torte had a very unpleasant, floury consistency. We didn't mention anything at the time, and ate the food without complaint as it was a birthday and we didn't want to bring down the mood of our evening. I did experience stomach pain and nausea on the night (though admit this could be coincidental!). We opted to only have continental breakfast, there was a good variety and we had everything we needed. Hot buffet was served in a different room. On the morning there was a fire alarm incident which caused a commotion on our floor. I'm not sure if it was a drill or not (if it was, we were not made aware on check in that it would occur) but noone made an effort to reassure anyone. Finally, the staff...

The property is lovely and the location is perfect. We had the oak room that had a lovely view onto the gardens. The room was very quiet and very large so was perfect for us and our dog. Absolutely beautiful location and very peaceful nights sleep
