“A Slice of Culture and History!”

It was a stroke of luck that we chose Casa Lastra for our stay in Valparaiso. We have been hearing so many negative things about the rising crime rate that we had almost decided to skip it. Luckily we managed to get in touch with the owner who convinced us that Valparaiso is not the villain that it is so frequently depicted in the media. And indeed at no time whatsoever did we feel unsafe. Our genial host was an astounding fount of information about Valparaiso and its surroundings and eager to share his knowledge too. We took a bus from Santiago to Terminal Rodoviaro. From there it was a lovely short walk to his place passing through the colourful sights and sounds of roadside vendors and murals. When we made our way back the following Sunday, the street was closed for a carnival and we took the opportunity to participate in the revelry. The murals here are stupendous and they are literally everywhere! We especially like the stretch of never-ending murals gracing the shopfronts along the hills behind Casa Lastra where we discovered the best sunset view in Valparaiso. Casa Lastra itself is a remodelled old building with elegant architecture. Our huge room was tastefully furnished and it came with our own private bathroom. Both were well-maintained, kept very clean and equipped with all the must-have amenities. There is a rooftop terrace providing a stunning vista of the city which you can enjoy with your breakfast or just to hang out. But what captured my imagination was their interpretation of a themed room concept. Each room showcases a famous Chilean writer or poet and a book by said personage is laid out for your perusal. What a perfectly innovative introduction to Chilean culture! It is in a class of its own and has its own website to prove it. If you like staying in a unique historical building like us, then you will certainly love Casa Lastra. It has everything that a guest requires minus the blandness and soullessness of a normal hotel.

Fantastic stay - lovely room, clean and tidy, everything you need to cook in the communal kitchen, hot shower, comfy bed, and a great location. Loved our stay here. The host was extremely helpful. Would highly recommend. Excellent value for money.
