Dirk “Winter Paradise in Kawayu Onsen”
Truly a lovely place to stay. I wanted to experience the Senninburo in winter, and had a fabulous time...the guesthouse is directly opposite the outdoor winter onsen. The in-house food was great (if not strictly Japanese), the family hosts were wonderful with recommendations for a Kumano Kodo hike on my free day, and the shared toilets and baths fabulous. The two in-house onsen are wonderful and privately used. One of my favorite places on a trip where I spent 20-times as much on more "exclusive" accommodation. Worth the journey.

Really amazing place. Possibly my favourite place so far whilst travelling Japan. I’m not a fan of shared facilities but in this place they are immaculate! I mean so so clean 😊 The rooms are extremely cosy with excellent heating and air con, complimentary tea daily in a thermos flask and a beautiful view of the river across the road. At night, you can fall asleep listening to the sound of the river and frogs outside. Amazing. There are 2 indoor private onsens available to use which are so clean. I used one of the first day since it was raining outside. Robes and slippers provided in the room. The highlight is that there are shovels available by the front door and you can go across the road and dig your own onsen by the river! Or find one that’s already made. Location is great for hiking parts of the Kumano trail. It’s a small area so there aren’t many places to eat or a convenience store. We ate at the hotel and the food was delicious.
