As we couldn’t afford to fly to the Sahara Desert for some winter sun in November, we decided to check into the Park Manor Hotel in Scarborough instead. We were not disappointed. Despite the radiator being off, and the tiny window wide open, our room was still hotter than the sun. To survive, we had to walk around naked. At night we flung off the covers and tossed and turned in fitful fever until morning. We didn’t have time to locate the games room but no matter. The hotel had kindly laid on a dining room treasure hunt. The breakfast seating plan (for an almost empty restaurant) dictated that we sit at table 26. After ten minutes of searching high and low we eventually located our behind a pillar, the number artfully hidden by a christmas decoration. We were squashed up against the only other customers at breakfast, fortunately able to hear every word of their conversation. Such fun! The rooms are nothing like the ones in the photos on the website, but intriguing nevertheless. Did they create their pieces of art from leftovers? What is that strange structure by the door? When Scarbrough’s MFI closed down in the 1980s, did the Park Manor Hotel bulk buy all the remaining stock? How did the small shard of glass masquerading as a bedside shelf pass health and safety? Did the menu really need to be typeset in a comic sans knock off font? And could the neighbours across the carpark see us as easily as we could see them? It would have been nice to have been warned that you need a 4x4 off road vehicle to access the carpark, but luckily street parking is available. We did enjoy the pool, the steam room, the jacuzzi, the shower, the breakfast and our friendly waiter Liam. Unfortunately my partner and I will be spending the rest of the day in A&E waiting for a skin graft due to the temperature of the breakfast plates.

Fantastic location overlooking the northern edge of peasholm park and very close to the beach. Only a 20 minute walk from the town centre. Swimming pool, what a bonus.

Very impressed with all aspects of the hotel, The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, the comfort of the accommodation, the quality of the food (both breakfast and dinner,) the readiness and ability of staff to respond to requests. On our visit the enjoyment of the people and the activities of the church group who were also staying. We shall certainly hope to come again soon. Well done!
