During our trek on the Salkantay Trail, we spent one night here and it quickly became our favorite spot of the trip. Alicia was a fantastic host—friendly, helpful, and very attentive, making us feel at home. The rooms were clean and very comfortable. We highly recommend this accommodation and especially appreciated Alicia’s delicious home-cooked dinner and early breakfast, which provided us with the energy we needed. Additionally, she took time to share more about her culture with us. We can’t wait to return and experience more of her wonderful hospitality. :)

“Most people stay one night — we stayed seven nights and could have stayed longer!”

As a coffee-loving local of Narrm (Melbourne, Australia) and with only 2 weeks to stay in South America, I was after a relaxing week-long stay at a coffee farm where we could immerse ourselves in local culture as well as learn more about the beans that is the cause of my obsession. ;-) A Google search led me to this quaint little lodge/coffee farm. The raving reviews say they wish they stayed more than 1 night…so we stayed 7 nights. It’s right on the Inca trail towards Machu Picchu, so mostly overlooked as an overnight stop by Salkantay Trail hikers. Having tried hiking in my 20s and later, whirlwind trips with packed itineraries passing villages where I wish I stayed longer, and as a budding ink painting artist with a demanding day job, I didn’t have the energy to plan an itinerary. So I thought worst case, we’ll have a relaxing week of coffee, food, and painting. What we didn’t expect was Julio and their family going out of their way to arrange some local sights for us. We went to the hot springs, honey liqueur/mead tasting, learning about conventional coffee, specialist coffee, and gesha coffee — how they grow and process it organically. We also got to experience picking cherry beans for each type, roasting them with this ancient Inca pottery roasting oven over a gas stove. I brought home two bags of freshly-roasted coffee beans with no problems declaring at Australian and US customs. The food was amazing — with Peru being the foodie centre of South America, we had the most authentic and freshest dishes here. You can ask for spit-roast cuy which is cooked over a bonfire in the garden (do tai chi/yoga while you wait). The cuy was cheaper than Cusco city, much more authentic and delectable to our tastes (we are Eurasian-Aussie foodies who lived in Tokyo and Singapore so we don’t say this lightly).

Julio Cesar and his family are an absolutely lovely group of people who provided us with information about the local sites, great food and excellent accommodation. Our favorite hotel on the Salkantay Trek.

Alicia and her family are so welcoming and helped us with all of our needs. It took us a minute to find the location but when we arrived they were so kind and made sure we were okay and settled in.
