I needed a quiet week after travelling for a month before and it was exactly that. Mostly quiet peaceful hotel right in the heart of a busy but fun part of Merida.

I have been in this hotel quite some times, and I keep coming back. It is not a fancy hotel, but it is very affordable, placed in a privileged location, fair prices, with friendly and knowledgeable staff. Everything is straightforward, what you see is what you get. It is a simple hotel, with a nice, warm, tiny and clean swimming pool, the rooms are basic with decent beds and linen in pristine condition, everything was neat in the bathroom, and elsewhere in the room. The building and the infrastructure is a bit run down, but well painted and maintained, this helps to give a sharp image of an old building. A/C was polar cold, plus a ceiling fan that helps disseminating the cold air, that was appreciated, there is no noise reduction between rooms, so you hear pretty much whatever happens next door. There is no restaurant or breakfast offered, but there are lots of restaurants around, including one of the finest in town with local delicacies right next door (la Chaya Maya), Pola ice cream and espresso bar is just one block away (don't miss it), and the Santa Lucía Park is just opposite with its array of international and local food joints that are guaranteed to satisfy even the most demanding tastebuds.

hotel santa lucia is an old hotel with these beautiful features from the old days, which will make your stay an adventure. some of the stuff in the room didn’t seem to work, but after a bit of puzzling everything functioned as it should be! for the less adventurous traveller, here’s the: Walkthrough … How to flush the toilet: Next to the bed there are two switches, put the upper one ‘on’ and the lower one ‘off’ Count the numbers of flowers on the paintings above the bed and divide this number by the room number you are in. Say this number in the mirror of the bathroom while standing on one leg. There’s an envelope on the mirror, you will have to put exactly 65 pesos in there. Leave the envelope on the little cupboard in between the beds. On the inside of the door there is a leaflet. Take the leaflet and hang it on the outside with the text: “servicio de camarista” . Put all the pillows on one bed (it doesn’t matter which bed). Go outside and have a drink, when you arrive in your room: Open the second drawer of the cupboard under the mirror and flush the toilet. You might receive a special item. Warm water in the shower: This is a tricky one!! Switch the main light ‘on’ in the room (the one which is next to the door). The light will make a noise on a certain frequency. Make a note of the number of this frequency (in Herz) and switch off the light. Now do the same with the light above the mirror. Take these two numbers (in Herz) and divide them. Press this number in the keypad of the safe, you will notice nothing will happen. Don’t worry, open the curtains and wait until its dark. Now open the left tap of the shower and there will be warm water!! Switch on the ceiling ventilator: When you move the beds you will find out the bedposts aren’t connected to the beds. You’ll have switch the both bedposts around and sing your national anthem backwards. Take the tv (!) remote and press the number of non functional switches in the room.
