Traveller reviews

“I had a relaxing stay in a beautiful historical house in Masterton.”
18 Jan 2025
The breakfast was excellent, a Dutch breakfast. Very filling and delicious. The coffee was great, too. I liked my bedroom with its window seating and beautiful, old, original wooden floors and doors. The light switches and latches on the doors are original in the heritage property. Leon told me the house was the first in Masterton to have electric lighting. I also had my own bathroom and entrance to the house. Plenty of light from the large windows looking onto the garden. The garden is filled with flowers and beautiful roses and a hammock! The hosts, Kinnie and Leon are very friendly and helpful. I found my weekend stay comfortable and relaxing. The house is within walking distance of the CBD with its shops, cafes, bookshop, Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and History, and the Wool Shed Museum. I loved the lavender in the Queen Elizabeth Gardens.

“Well worth it.”

The homely hospitality and the great breakfasts made our 3 nights really comfortable.

“Lovely stay at this B&B.”

The location was great- easy access to main crntre. The rooms were very pretty and clean, beds comfortable. Host was lovely and friendly, giving us lots of information on local attractions and activities to do.

“We'd love to stay here again”

Beautiful old house with an interesting history. Kinnie is a lovely and very welcoming host with great recommendations for places to eat. Handy location close to the town centre

“Very pleased to have booked this guest house.”

My girlfriend and I had a very pleasant stay at History@Renall in Masterton. This guest house is over 100 years old with lots of character including traditional NZ wooden features (flooring, beams and panelling). The hosts, Leon & Kinnie Vermeulen, were incredibly friendly from the time of arrival to our departure, finishing off with photos. Breakfast was plentiful and an opportunity to meet the other guests. Another good feature of History@Renall is that it’s only ten minutes walk from the heart of Masterton.

It is traditional and old but a pleasant stay. Spacious room and bed was very comfortable. I personally liked the masala tea provided. Hosts were kind and made us feel welcome.

“It was okay and quiet even if the owners are around.”

Breakfast is okay. Coffee and food were prepared too early. When we eat, coffee is lukewarm, and toast and croissants are a little chewy. The hosts were very warm and welcoming.

“We felt like one family.”

Kinnie and Leon are welcoming. Kinnie and I came from the same country Philippines so it was a warth welcome. She made sure our needs were met as she prepared our breakfast. We both have love gardening so talked about plants and families. It was great!

“Great long weekend getaway venue”

Lovely old house in the loveliest part of Masterton. Very handy location to supermarkets, town and the Kurapuni movie theatres (the Screening Room). Perfect for a long weekend away to catch a movie festival and be a great launching pad for the southern Wairarapa towns. I had the studio off the main house which was very private. Outstanding hosts, very welcoming and lovely - good suggestions about where to go to do things locally.

“Homely”
