Hotel Overview

Viscondes da Varzea is a charming hotel set in an aristocratic country manor dating back to the 17th century. It is surrounded by vineyards, fruit orchards and olive groves at the heart of the Douro Region.
Rural Casa dos Viscondes da Varzea is an example of Portugal's Gothic-Manueline architecture. On-site wonders include a chapel with a baroque altar, centuries' old wine cellars and the oil press, still in use.
The atmospheric rooms of the hotel include antique furnishings and a deluxe bathroom with bathtub and courtesy bathrobe and slippers. Decorative elements include stone banisters and baroque goblets.

Our stay was memorable and magical from the start. We were met by Georges who gave us a tour of the sumptuous rooms filled with an eclectic mix of souvenirs and bric-a-brac. He helped us with cases and showed us to our fine and spacious room. Later we enjoyed a beautifully prepared and served evening meal sat at a grand table with the other guests. This included tastings of wine from their vineyard and local port. The hotel is a manorial farmhouse set amongst vineyards and orchards. It was a great place to stay and we were well looked after throughout.

The entire experience was one of the best we have ever enjoyed on all our trips all over the world. This is indeed a very special place, impossible to single anything out, with the exception of our host, Maria, what a wonderful welcoming lady, our stay was enriched by meeting her! Everything tasted delicious and the kitchen staff were so friendly and helpful. The house & grounds are magical, we could have stayed there for our entire trip (had we not booked so many other places in advance). Looking forward to a return visit, for a longer stay!

Maria, the owner, was very warm and welcoming whenever we saw her. She gave recommendations of local attractions and made sure her staff took care of our requests. Sunat, the head Nepalese worker seemed to do pretty much everything with various other support staff to help. The hotel grounds are huge with plenty of fruit trees and numerous paths to explore.

We liked the feel of the building. It is a bit quirky but the lounge areas are very comfortable and large. The staff are very helpful and nothing seems too much trouble. When we were there many of the staff were Nepalese and spoke good English.

Enjoyed both al fresco dining and also the marvellous family dining setting. Using the external spaces, terraces. The sounds of the vineyard during harvest.

Best host, personalised and welcoming. Very cosy and familiar atmosphere. If you want to stay in a real rural aristocratic house, this is the place. You are in the middle of a typical farm with all the history and tradition associated. Don’t miss the dinner, with good and traditional food from the region.

A beautiful old manor house, still lived in by the family. Our room was fantastic, situated in a wing overlooking the garden and a lovely view of the valley. Very comfortable and spacious. The staff were incredible and we were really well looked after. Meals were great, plenty wholesome food, the vegetable soup was one of the nicest we have tasted and the duck was fantastic. We genuinely had no issues at all.
