It was too expensive for one night and there were 3 people in the room. The best thing would have been 2 rooms. But booking couldn't understand me the many times I tried to explain this to them before visiting the hotel. But I was unsuccessful.

The books are lovely. The dinner is certainly an experience - it was fun watching the chefs and staff orchestrate each dish and explain the story. The staff were lovely and the complimentary coffee was fun.

We recently stayed one night at Hakone Honbako, and overall, it was a pleasant experience. The hotel is not large-scale, which contributes to its peaceful and quiet atmosphere—perfect for a relaxing getaway. The location is decent, though not near the main train station. It’s about a 10-minute leisurely walk from a smaller train station, which was manageable. The standout feature of our room was the outdoor onsen tub, which offered a private and serene soaking experience. On the plus side, the room rate included dinner and breakfast. Dinner was a multi-course fusion meal with uniquely crafted dishes by the chef. The dishes were interesting and mostly delicious, though portions were not very large. While I personally prefer a more traditional Japanese meal, my husband quite enjoyed the creative dishes provided. Overall, Hakone Honbako offers a unique and tranquil stay, especially for those looking to unwind in a peaceful setting.

The dinner service was exceptional! It was so unique and unlike anything I have ever experienced. The lobby and room was exquisite , filled with a wide range of books to read. It was so peaceful. The personal hot spring and public hot springs were both amazing.

The hotel exceeded all expectations - the casual premium nature of it (you are invited to dinner in the lounge suit). The outstanding food - multi course dinner and breakfast, with a kitchen tour to explain the story of the meal. A true experience and if you also travel around the hakone area, it can be an adventure to get there - pirate ship on the lake, cable car etc.. Brilliant stay, thank you!

The nicest hotel I've ever stayed at. We booked it as a treat to relax after a few weeks travelling around Japan, and it more than delivered. The onsen bath on the terrace was amazing, the meals were incredible and we loved relaxing with a book in the many reading nooks. Although expensive, it was worth the money for the service and experience, and we are already talking about returning next time we visit Japan.

I loved the books and the whole dining experience. Overall the experience was great but it is a bit too expensive for the value that is being brought in. The staff are amazing and the dining experience from breakfast to dinner is what made the whole stay amazing.

We had the most incredible and relaxing time here. Food was unexpectedly a large tasting menu of fine small dishes and was great! Staff are amazing and so kind, facilities are great, location is lovely and scenic and quiet. Onsen is clean and beautiful. All in all great time, didn’t want to leave
