“Unforgettable history, luxury and comfort in Elvas with incredible hosts”
16 Mar 2025
Simply one of the best hotel/guest houses I have stayed in my life. An incredible historic building interior, peaceful and remote from the bright sunshine outside, decorated like a royal palace, with as many stunning communal living rooms and lounges as there are guest rooms, dressed in incredible textiles and classic armchairs and side tables. Comfortable, richly furnished with antiques and art, it is like stepping back in time with the opulence of a stately home and many quiet, coy spaces to read or relax in a slice of history. The bedrooms are large and freshly decorated with deep comfortable beds and huge pillows, antique cupboards, a spacious bathroom and regular daily cleaning. Duarte and Lisa were amazing hosts. Duarte took time to introduce me to all of the house and make me feel really welcome and both he and Lisa provided a fantastic breakfast each day in their equally impressive dining room, a selection of breads and marmalades, freshly cooked eggs, freshly squeezed Orange juice, taken on antique furniture in front of a roaring fire. I did not try the terrace or the swimming pool due to the time of year, but it is truly a safe, welcoming house where it is relaxing to spend a quiet morning or evening simply enjoying the tranquility of the impressive common areas and furnishings. Outside the house, Elvas is a stunning fortified city, always bathed in sunshine, with friendly locals and steep, sleepy lanes or walks outside the town walls. The castle is a short walk up from the house and it is just far enough from the centre to be quiet but with restaurants a walk away. I was lucky to come in the off season when I rarely saw another person even for several days and felt like I was living in my own historic palace, and slept as well as in any place I have ever stayed.

“Original, welcoming and calm.”

“A perfect historic romantic destination property”

Our stay was exceptional , from the moment we were welcomed by our host Duarte to the elegant breakfast in the dining room . We had planned to tour Elvas but instead we enjoyed basking in the history and grander of this boutique hotel. We fixed our own gun and tonics with herbs ( 6 different gins to choose from!) from the honor bar and whiled away 2 hours looking at books and magazines from their collection.Later we shared a bottle of wine with cheese outdoors by the pool. The bed was very comfortable with lush down pillows .. a perfect evening .

“Way too short!”

On our trip to Portugal, we stayed in 9 different hotels and private houses, Travassos 11 was the highlight!. First the location is terrific, right in the centre of town, second parking, maybe we were lucky but 2mn from the hotel and free, third the building a fabulous little 18th century palace. The main photograph on the website shows the rear view of the Palace with the pool, what you don't see is the truly grand yet intimate salons, dining room, chapel and games room on the principal floor. Antique furniture, collections of objects, fabulous wallpapers, amazing lighting, just like being in an issue of a very expensive decoration magazine. I loved it! Our room was on the ground floor and was enormous, with the most comfortable bed, and a bathroom with a huge marble shower and wonderful toiletries, thick towels! An absolute dream of a hotel which we had to ourselves that night. No expense spared anywhere. A lady looked after us beautifully, she made us dinner as we were coming to the end of our tour and we were really tired and breakfast was equally as amazing. We felt like kings, thank you!

Everything was top. The staf was great. Showing us the whole house on arrival. The house is unbelivable. Incredible value for the money. On breakfast we felt us like royalty.
