The owner seems a nice guy. The accommodation maintains a Victorian decor theme consistent with the age of the house. However, the soft furnishings and bedding are simply rather shabby (not dirty, just somewhat worn out). Cobwebs on the ceiling and light fitting indicate that the cleaners need to pay more attention to detail. The shower was an instant-heat electric type and a good brand (Aqualisa) but didn't maintain a consistent temperature, and I found myself having to make continuous adjustments whilst the flow temperature swung wildly between freezing cold and scalding hot. The TV in the room was tiny, and its audio quality was quite poor. I was also dismayed to find that there was a gas boiler in a cupboard within the room without any apparent carbon monoxide detector. This boiler was, at one stage, running continuously between limit cycles (indicative of inadequate maintenance). I bought a carbon monoxide detector in a local shop, for my own reassurance, for the single night of my stay.

A characterful 'traditional' B&B without the breakfast - but not a problem because there are plenty of eateries a minute or two's walk away. The room with the four-poster bed was spacious, with armchairs and a sofa as well as an ensuite bathroom (no power shower, though) and, to use that word again, characterful, with exquisite wall pictures etc. The location is perfect, 3 mins from the station, 5 mins from Maumbury Rings, 2 mins from the town centre. Communications with host Mark were speedy and helpful. All in all, recommended.

The room was spacious,lovely and warm and we were made very welcome by the owner Mark????. Such a comfortable room, plenty of tea,coffee etc, shower room very good. Our room was at the front of the house, yet we were not disturbed by the road. Plenty of places to eat nearby. Great to stay.

Our host was really sweet and room was very comfortable as well. Though I have stayed at various places, my stay at Beggar’s Knap, I would say was immensely satisfying.

Very comfortable bed, good en suite, and remarkably quiet so close to the centre of Dorchester. Range of good places to eat and good coffee and breakfast just opposite. Mark is great host.
