Great time at Batu Kapal Guest House and the best thing was the amazing staff. They are amazingly friendly and nice who couldn’t do enough to make our time there very enjoyable. The setting is outstanding beside a river you can swim/paddle in with superb views on the jungle and hills. Getting to the guest house from the village is a thrilling experience in itself. We took a Grab from Medan & met by the staff who took us to the guest house on the back of bikes out of the village & through the countryside. It’s rough going in places but exciting nevertheless. Good idea to travel light with backpacks although the staff helped with bags. We were only there few hours chilling in room when one of the guys fetched us to see large male orangutan who was feeding in the large tree immediately beside the main lodge. There for quite a while & unperturbed by bunch of us staring & taking pics - absolutely amazing. We signed up for the the 2 day jungle trek via the guest house and they organised absolutely everything- only 2 of us on the trek and we were looked so well to give us such an amazing experience. We left New Year’s Day on bikes to the start of the trek and within 30 mins we saw a mummy orangutan with a youngster so close to us & within another 30 mins saw another female. We saw loads of other animals including Thomas leaf monkeys. Our guide, Japur (sorry if misspelt) was fantastic giving us so much info on the animals, plants, local area. We also had one of the guys at the guest house training to be a guide who was brilliant helping my wife over some rough terrain. The trek was hard going for us but they let us go at our pace. They prepared snacks, lunch, etc for us throughout the trek which was truly delicious & we couldn’t quite work out how they managed to knock up such feasts in the middle of a Sumatran jungle. We stayed in a camp overnight which was was very basic but all part of the experience.

It’s in the middle of the jungle. The guest house collects you from the bus and then take you by motorbike to the guest house. 15 mins of dirt bike tracks so not for the faint hearted! The place is so peaceful and situated footsteps from the river - which you can swim in, which borders the jungle. Wildlife all around is amazing - macaques, Thomas leaf and silver leaf monkeys - garden is beautiful and bar/restaurant is such a great friendly space and the Jungle Band played for us 😄 Bayu, the king of the jungle, helped us with the trek and onward travel, the guides, Bagus, Ali, Wise, Donny and everyone who works at Batu Kapel are stars!

Bayu has an amazing place close to the forest. His staff makes everything affordable and easy to do. His mom's food is incredibly yummy, and coconut water is very refreshing. I really recommend this place to stay.

We had a wonderful stay at Batu Kapal Guest house. The staff is so friendly and make you feel like you are at home. We did the 2 day 1 night jungle trek with them, it was amazing. They explained everything very well. We were lucky and we saw many animals and orangutans. Greetings, Fleur and Christina

I stayed for 3 weeks at Batu Kapal and would recommend to others that they not just stay for a day before and/or after a jungle trek but enjoy this peaceful and beautiful location for multiple days. The primates (several monkey species and orangutans), butterflies, lizards and birds around the property provide frequent interest. When their isn't great wildlife in your view, the beautiful scenery will make you happy to be there.

This is the best place you can go to in Bukit Lawang! Everything is amazing, the staff, the place, the quiet and nature… I only booked for a few nights but decided to stay over a week, just because I felt like a family and I will definitely come back in a future. if you are looking for a real experience and cultural exchange, this is the place to go. Thank you Batu Kapal, Bayu, Iwan, Aji, Ali, Agus and company.

Batu Kapal is a magical place, surrounded by nature, away from the hustle and bustle of Bukit Lawang. The staff is wonderful, they made us feel like we were at home. They helped us with everything and shared laughter, music and card games with us. We felt like we took home not only the experience, but also having met good friends. Also around our room we were able to see Thomas leafs, different types of macaques (in fact one day they were on our balcony) and on the last day an orangutan! We also had the opportunity to do the 3-day trek, sleeping two nights in the jungle, which was another unforgettable experience and we would like to highlight our guide Jipur, who was great and informed us about the jungle and the species that inhabit it, and the cook Mr. Black, who despite being in the jungle, made us delicious and abundant meals. It has truly been an unforgettable experience and, although we know it is difficult, we would love to revisit this wonderful place and its people, Bagus, Jipur and the rest of the team.
