Traveller reviews

“Pleasant but not worth the expense.”

Very old-fashioned onsen-style hotel. The lobby and the woven bamboo screens are lovely- the restaurants looked to have a similar vibe, although we didn’t eat on the property. Perhaps it was just because it was early spring but the garden visible from the lounge/lobby area was not particularly green or welcoming; there was a big net over one end of the pond which was pretty ugly, so it didn’t give you much to look out at. Staff are thorough to a level which feels a bit much to this Australian but tends to be very appreciated by the older Japanese clientele, so I get it. They take your shoes at entry and store them for you so that the whole hotel is shoes-free, like a ryokan. Checking in took a long time and perhaps the staff were a bit too thorough showing us around the room- I mean, yes, I appreciate being shown the delicious welcome drink and advised to drink it on the day while it’s fresh, but I can work out where the bathroom amenities are by myself. When you’ve been travelling and you’re ready to just relax, it feels like a bit of a hurdle. There is a shelf with many different types of pillows to choose from but basically all were already gone when we checked in at about 5pm, and stayed gone the two nights we were there, so that felt a bit pointless. I’m sure someone was enjoying them, though! When we left to go to out one day, the staff asked where we were going out to (which was the Jigoku/“hells”) and gave us a map and a discount voucher, which was very thoughtful. Also, the welcome drink was a yuzu cordial with yuzu jelly pieces and it was exceptionally delicious. Finally, the whole reason you stay: the onsen. The onsen had good facilities; the women’s side had an inside tiled bath divided into two parts (clear water and cloudy micro bubbles) and an outside stone bath. The outside bath was lovely but one side was a touch visible to the balconies above so no one sat there. I do wish it had been a little deeper though.
