“A good base rather than a place to enjoy”

Amed is comprised of several little villages and hamlets strung out along the coast and Sama Sama is situated in a small resort at Jemeluk Bay which focuses on free diving, diving and snorkelling with several outlets in the area and a multitude of little cafés to choose from. There is an accessible house reef that is worth exploring with snorkelling equipment, which is easy to rent if you haven’t brought any. There were no strong tides or large waves so the beach offers a lovely opportunity for relaxed novice snorkelling. Less to see here than elsewhere, it nevertheless offers a very good starting point, especially at the far corner of the beach. Low tide offers the opportunity to walk along the beach. Sama Sama itself as a hotel is not noteworthy, but offers a base. The linen was fresh and the bed and pillows were comfortable and the little compound well swept. The ritual blessing of the shrines was nice. Whistling pigeons flew overhead. Good places to eat are the Green Leaf Café offering a lovely range of breakfast smoothie bowls, or cooked breakfasts, as well as a wonderful array of lunch options – all of which come beautifully presented. Situated right on the beachfront, it is a pleasant location to sit and relax. The Kamaze Café (part of the Ocean Prana diving centre) is also strongly recommended for the quality of the food. I particularly enjoyed the make your own salad option, but they also have a good selection of cooked choices (Indonesian and Western), served in a pleasant ‘laid-back’ environment. What about a chilled Bintang before dinner? Then the Sunrise Café offers an elevated vantage point to watch the sunset whilst enjoying a cold drink (they also have cheap rooms also if you are travelling on a tight budget and the owners are very friendly). A highlight for me of my stay was watching the local traditional music ensemble reherse.

Nice place facing the beach. Very helpful staff with snorkeling tours and booking fastboat tickets. Great restaurant with various dishes and drinks to choose from.
